This morning on the front page of Drudge Report was this headline;

HIRING! ‘Grassroots’ work to promote Obama’s healthcare pays $11-16 per hour…

At first I chuckled a little (sic) that there are so many people out there that think the canvassers in these ‘grassroots’ organizations are out there pounding the pavement out of the goodness of their heart or because they ‘believe’ in what they’re doing. Or to me more importantly that the people that run these “non-profit” organizations are only in it to make a difference, change the world! What a load of crap. One of the best ways to make money is to become a non-profit.

As you may have noticed, the Craigslist posting has been removed. Don’t be dismayed they have other postings with almost identical information that I was smart enough to save.

Craigslist posting from 6/17/2009 – SUMMER JOB TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING $10-$15/HOUR

Craigslist posting from 7/03/2009 – FIGHT FOR GREEN ENERGY $10-15/HOUR

My favorite. Craigslist posting from 07/14/2009 – WORK FOR OBAMA’S PROGRESSIVE AGENDA #350-550 PER WEEK FULL TIME

Anyway, after a couple of minutes I wondered why Drudge thought this was important enough to put in the top left corner? So, I decided to do a little checking into The Fund for the Public Interest.

The Fund: Experts In Building Organizations, Winning Campaigns & Training Activists

Fund for the Public Interest’s 25-year commitment to professional, systematic grassroots action has made us the go-to group in our field. When it comes to building organizations and creating the groundswell of public support needed to overcome powerful special interest opposition, our effectiveness is unrivaled.

In 20 states, the Fund trains our staff to raise money, recruit members and do grassroots political work on behalf of more than 50 progressive organizations — including the Sierra Club, the Human Rights Campaign and Environment America. Meanwhile, hundreds of Fund alumni lead the way for hundreds of other effective political organizations, elected officials, and socially-conscious businesses.

Then I ran across this article from the Daily Beast. Liberal sweatshop? This cannot be possible – yes it is (emphasis mine).

The Fund for the Public Interest raises money for all kinds of liberal causes, but a lawsuit has forced it to pay millions of dollars in overtime to its legions of idealistic door-knockers.

The nation’s largest fundraiser for progressive causes issued checks to thousands of former workers in the last several weeks after settling a $2.15 million class-action suit alleging it subjected workers to grueling hours without overtime pay.

I’ll admit I’m to the point that every time I see a “grassroots” campaign I wonder how ACORN is involved, can’t help it. But in this case the Sierra Club and Human Rights Campaign caught my eye and after looking over The Fund for Public Interest’s website I didn’t see ACORN listed as a ‘partner’.  Then I saw it –

Voter Registration

The Fund ran the Community Voters Project to register low-income minority voters for the 2004 election. We ran campaign offices in Florida, Michigan and North Carolina. Fund staff applied decades of experience in grassroots organizing to develop a model for a successful large-scale voter registration effort built around face-to-face contact.

Would this be the same Community Voters Project that was charged with voter fraud, why yes it is.

Hampton police last week charged Brittany Wyatt and Jessica Lemon, both 18-year-olds who live in Newport News, with one count of voter fraud, spokeswoman Cpl. Allison Good said. Anthony House, 22, was charged with four counts of voter fraud.

The three worked for a nonprofit group, Community Voters Project, hired to sign up voters. Employees were required to meet a daily quota of completed applications, Good said.

And in Milwaukee and Milwaukee.

ACORN and the Community Voters Project are among five activist groups, all from the liberal side of the political spectrum, that have launched massive voter registration drives in advance of the Nov. 4 presidential election.

In the current case, the Election Commission referred four workers — at least two from ACORN and at least one from the Community Voters Project — to the Milwaukee County district attorney’s office for possible criminal prosecution, Edman said. She was not sure which group employed the fourth individual.

Milwaukee’s top election official said Thursday she plans to seek criminal investigations of 10 more voter registration workers, including two accused of offering gifts to sign up voters.

All the workers were paid by two organizations running voter registration drives, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now and the Community Voters Project. Overall, 37 of the suspect workers were on the ACORN payroll, 11 were paid by the voters project and it’s not clear who employed the other one.

So, what are the charges here?

Among the latest group, two ACORN workers are accused of offering pre-paid gasoline cards or restaurant gift cards to people in exchange for signing up to vote.

Edman said she wants Landgraf to look into whether the workers violated a state law that forbids offering cash or gifts to sway voters.

Eight voter project workers are suspected of making up information on voter applications, Edman said.

Among the workers previously referred to Landgraf, two are accused of submitting cards for dead voters.

Others appear to have submitted cards for people who said they never filled out an application or who were already registered, signed cards themselves, or falsified driver’s license numbers.

I could go on but you get the idea.

Then I took a look at the Fund For The Public Interest current partner Progressive Future.

From helping elect Barack Obama to promoting a bold new progressive agenda.

This summer, Progressive Future will be talking to tens of thousands of citizens in nine cities across the country.  We’re focused on pushing President Obama’s progressive agenda through Washington—past Rush Limbaugh and his right-wing and special interest allies.

As President Obama has said, we can’t afford to wait another year to fix health care. Doing nothing is dragging down our economy, costing countless lives, and leaving nearly 50 million Americans without coverage.

We’re joining SEIU, MoveOn, US Action and others as part of the Health Care For America Now! coalition. And, this summer we’ll be talking to tens of thousands of citizens about pushing President Obama’s health care plan past Rush Limbaugh and the insurance industry.

Yes, this is the same Health Care forAmerica Now! that ACORN is all over.

This was their latest rally on June 25, 2009 in DC.

This is not the only ACORN connection for Progressive Future.

What We’re Doing

Progressive Future is partnering with Brave New Foundation to tell the Mortgage Bankers Association to back off. We’re asking our members and other Americans to sign our petition to the Mortgage Bankers. And, we’re also helping citizens tell their own stories about foreclosure and the impact on their lives.

Brave New Foundation: Our campaign partners have set up a special website on the housing crisis.

The Brave New Foundation website is our old friends Fighting for our Homes and they don’t even try to hide their connection with ACORN, the red shirts and banners are front and center in their videos and their website.

brave new world

The Brave New Foundation is an interesting group. From all appearances this group has taken social issues and turned them into a business. If you really take a look, Brave New Foundation is a film studio capitalizing on the political climate and YES they’re making good money doing it.

Mr. Greenwald is an award-winning producer and director of more than 60 features, television movies and miniseries.

Brave New Studios: Building the progressive infrustructure for the future. With more people receiving their news from the Internet than ever before, it is essential that the progressive movement have a state-of-the-art studio geared toward creating online content. At Brave New Foundation’s headquarters in Culver City, California, Brave New Studio creates cutting-edge video webcasting and pretaped shows seen by the online community around the world.

Brave New Theaters is a website that brings together a global network of screening hosts and filmmakers by providing services to both so they can reach more people. The site will emphasize films with a political message.

This is some of their handywork.

So, we started at seemingly harmless ad to hire ‘volunteers’ and this is where we end up. I could keep going however it’s starting to confuse even me! Maybe I need one of those handy dandy flowcharts like the one done for healthcare?
