Why has FEMA paid The Acorn Institute $1.4 Million in grants since August 2008?
Paid 8/29/08 – Fiscal Year 2007 = $450,484
Paid 9/04/09 – Fiscal Year 2008 – $997,402 (only 6 grants were issued for more money than ACORN – out of 220 grants)
According to the FEMA website the purpose of these grants are:
The purpose of the Fire Prevention and Safety Grants is to fund Fire Prevention and Research and Development activities. Fire Prevention Grant Activities are designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate incidences of deaths and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards. Research and Development Grant Activities are aimed at improvements to firefighter health and safety.
A google search – ACORN fire safety, ACORN fire prevention, etc. does not return any results related to fire safety activities/campaigns for ACORN.
The Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006 (Transparency Act) requires a single searchable website, accessible by the public for free that includes for each Federal award
These funds were paid by the Department of Homeland Security/FEMA according their own website, so why aren’t they listed? Who else is our government giving OUR money to that we don’t know about?
Only 3 grants were awarded in the State of Louisiana during this last cycle, Louisiana State Fire Marshals Office ($62,004), Monroe Fire Department ($192,000) and ACORN ($997,402). ACORN is at least five times more qualified than the Fire Marshal or Fire Department?
FEMA has been offering these grants since at least 2005, however ACORN never received any funding under this program prior to August 2008.
Janet Napolitano – are you aware of these funds being paid? Why are these funds being paid to a known criminal organization?
UPDATE – Brought to us by Hot Air commenter DSchoen (thank you!) – The Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006 was a bill co-sponsored by Obama – transparency??
