ACORN Is Like A Religious Group

Unbiased, factual reporting by The Boston Globe:

ANYONE who’s been surfing the right-wing blogosphere would mistake the activist group ACORN for a sinister force hell-bent on falsifying the US Census, registering nonexistent voters, and promoting underage prostitution. This caricature distorts the group’s intentions and overstates its influence.

Hmmmm. Sinister force hell-bent on falsifying the US Census, registering nonexistent voters, and promoting underage prostitution. O.K., well that part of the article is accurate ;o)

This made me laugh.

Still, the group insists that its public dollars aren’t mingled with money for political advocacy. Its position is similar to that of religious groups that take government money but vow not to proselytize. But as with the faith-based groups, ACORN’s separation of church and state can be difficult to monitor.

Religious groups and ACORN, sure I can see that comparison.

The national organization, which recently moved its headquarters from New Orleans to Washington, has 71 local affiliates, plus a number of like-minded but legally separate allied organizations such as ACORN Housing.

I thought I read somewhere that they have more than 300 ‘affiliates’ – guess I was wrong. They’re just “like-minded” organizations.

ACORN Rats Jumping Ship

Via The Wall Street Journal:

Guillermo Loaiza, a loan officer for a unit of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. in Phoenix, has resigned from the board of Acorn Housing, a spokesman for J.P. Morgan said.

The J.P. Morgan spokesman declined to say why Mr. Loaiza had stepped down from the Acorn Housing board but said the decision was his. Mr. Loaiza didn’t respond to requests for comment.

A spokeswoman for Acorn Housing had no immediate comment on the resignation. Mr. Loaiza was one of five directors of Acorn Housing, according to the group’s Web site.

J.P. Morgan has said it doesn’t have a regular working relationship with Acorn or Acorn Housing. Bank of America Corp. said late last week that it suspended its work with Acorn Housing pending reviews of that organization’s operations.

Interesting wording from J.P. Morgan. If you didn’t know better, you’d think they didn’t know who ACORN was – not;

JP Morgan Chase contributed over $5 million in grants to the housing affiliate, over a five-year period. But this program is no longer active, Jennifer Zuccarelli, a spokeswoman said.

“JP Morgan Chase provided a five-year community development grant to fund affordable housing and foreclosure prevention initiatives across the country,” Zuccarelli said. “The commitment ended a year ago in 2008 and no further grants will be considered.”

ACORN – never heard of them………………..

Bertha Lewis Just Doesn’t Get It

Via The Boston Globe:

“To include language in legislation that targets a single organization is unconstitutional and wrong,” ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis said in a statement. Congressman Nadler said it best: “The punishment here did not follow some criminal or administrative process with basic due process protections. It flowed out of a Fox News network report, which led the call for a public lynching. There was no statement of charges and no reference to a judicial or administrative finding of wrongdoing by ACORN.’ ”

While I’m sure that Bertha feels that all of ACORNs hard work over the last 2 years to elect Obama means that ACORN deserves to be paid back – Bertha, ACORN does not have a Constitutional “right” to our money.

Fox is not to blame for YOUR employees lack of common sense, morality and training – the responsibility of YOUR employees actions lay squarely on your shoulders. These actions were on YOUR watch Bertha, you cannot blame this on your predecessors any more than Obama can blame Bush.

Lewis added that ACORN is being singled out unfairly — after a controversy started when employees it later fired appeared to advise conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp on how to skirt the law — when other groups and corporations are accused of doing much worse.

Bertha, trying to convince people that this is somehow the first controversy for ACORN is just ridiculous. This is not the first time Congress has had to or should have acted on controversy caused by your organization. Have you forgotten about the Congressional Reportin 1997 that caused the end to your Americorp funding? Which by the way – didn’t work. Americorp no longer funds ACORN ‘directly’, they fund the United Way who then funds ACORN.

If you somehow think that somehow you can justify continuing to receive MY money by saying that other groups are doing much worse – PLEASE! As usual, you make statements without any specifics as your argument. If you’re aware of any organization with a worse record than ACORN, let’s hear it – who are they? We would really like to shut down their funding as well…………..

Mark Lloyd – Just Wow

Apparently racism is a requirement if you want to be a part of the Obama administration.

[blip.tv ?posts_id=2647755&dest=-1]

This is the same guy that thinks Hugo Chavez is a hero.

Mr. Lloyd your dark skin isn’t frightening, your belief system and possible influence on our society is. How dare you group the entire white race into a single sentence and call us all racists? You sir are a bigot and I for one do not want you on my payroll.

There is at least one Congressman asking questions regarding Mark Lloyd, Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR). Although, I’m not sure he’s getting any real answers.

According to the FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski, we have nothing to worry about. Mark Lloyd is only working on broadband – nothing here, move on.

Bertha Lewis – Different Interview – Different Attitude

It’s interesting the change of attitude from Bertha Lewis depending on where she is interviewing. When on Lou Dobbs,  she appeared tentative, embarressed, ashamed. Not here…………..Sirius Radio, MIP with Mark Thompson radio interview.

Part One – Ho’gate – takeaways.

“This is a coordinated effort that goes all the way back to the Bush White House.”

“It is awfully curious that people are being disrespectful to the leader of the free world who happens to be a black man and trying to destroy the largest community organization in this country that happens to organize for poor black/brown people.”

“People ought to see this as a new kind of McCarthyism.”

Part Two – Doctored Films  – takeaways.

“These are housing folks, these are not ACORN people.”

“We are here to help folks and we don’t make judgements and we listen to people”

“This doesn’t suit the right-wing or Fox’s purpose to show the real truth.”

“Right now ACORN is being vilified and you might get a call – Have you now or ever been associated with ACORN.”

Part Three – Right Wing Echo Chamber – takeaways.

“This group that would in fact move over a million black and brown folks – are you – NO – you’re upsetting the balance of power and this is what it really comes down to and this is why they fear us and want to destroy us. Because we are not just trying to empower we are trying to organize poor people to take power.”

“We had no contract with the Census Bureau. We weren’t getting paid by the Census Bureau.”

“The Census Bureau decided it was politically expedient for them to write a letter saying we don’t want any association with ACORN. Well, guess what, you didn’t have a contract with us and it was a little over the top. But you know what, doesn’t matter, we’re still gonna encourage our members, other poor people in our community to make sure that they are counted.”

“Maybe we’re a majority minority country already.”

Part Four – $53 Million? – takeaways.

“I think the government got some value for the buck.”

Part Five – They were duped – takeaways.

“We will assist our former employees if they need help, they were duped.”

“Call you local representatives, tell them to man up and not be intimidated by this and have some backbone and stand up for ACORN.”

“They come for ACORN in the morning. They coming for you at night.”
